Sissy & Emmy

Over the years, my mom established a friendship with the one and only An. So, when a few family jewels were bequeathed to her, Atelier N was my mother's natural choice to make these heirlooms her own.

An collaborated with my mom to transform a diamond brooch into the art deco ring of her dreams. An's design features the old European-cut diamonds in their best light, strategically placed in a platinum setting with milgrain detail that echoes the curvature of the finger - resulting in a ring that is at once a sparkly stunner and a comfortable everyday piece for a woman that daily works with her hands in the yard and refurbishing old furniture.

“...I look down at this ring and it feels like my mom and I are holding hands, holding me over until we can be together in person again.”

While taking refuge in NC for three months during the height of pandemic-stricken NYC, my mom had the generous idea of making me a ring as well - using stones left in the original diamond brooch. We set up time with An and discussed the options - a band? Something to stack with other rings? As An sketched live, the choice became clear - a similar shape and style to the deco ring he made my mom, but with a few twists - yellow gold instead of platinum, baguettes instead of a round stone at the center.

The result - mother / daughter rings. Each with their own personality, but cut from the same cloth. Now back in NYC and 500 miles apart, I look down at this ring and it feels like my mom and I are holding hands, holding me over until we can be together in person again.
